THE SHOCK DOCTRINE
2025 : ‘Beyond Restraint’, Umbra Arts LLC, Minneapolis, MN
This piece critiques the government’s role in controlling the media we consume. Inspired by The Shock Doctrine by
Naomi Klein
(you could also say anti-inspired), I explore how crisis is manufactured and leveraged to manage public perception. Our so-called “freedom” is only as real as what we’re permitted to believe—every news cycle, social feed, and FYP is curated, censored, and approved by the state.
Visually, the collage is intentionally overwhelming: layers of media are piled on top of each other, only to be redacted, crossed out, and broken down. Headlines are obscured by black strips, fragmented until only scattered letters remain. This process mirrors how censorship and restriction often begin quietly, growing until entire truths are erased.
The physical act of layering, crossing out, and destroying the media sources was as critical as the imagery itself—each action a form of resistance. What is visible today may be erased tomorrow. This piece demands that viewers take it apart—line by line, image by image—forcing a confrontation with what has been hidden, lost, or forcibly forgotten.
It is meant to overwhelm. It is meant to shock.
